Mark Adams, bassist and one of the founding members of Saint Vitus, died last Tuesday (23) at the age of 64. Confirmation came via a private post on social media from guitarist Dave Chandler (via Loudwire):
“This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to write. I found out last night. I can’t say it out loud. I’m heartbroken to inform everyone that my best friend and co – founder of SAINT VITUS Mark Adams has passed away. The details are vague, as I haven’t actually spoken with the family yet. He left us May 23 2023 peacefully in his sleep. I’m trying to contact anyone in the family to find out more.”
He continues: “Mark was the best person I’ve ever met. He was kind to everyone, even those who did him wrong. Never had a bad word to say about anyone. Always found the good in everything no matter how bad it was. A great guy to be around. Nothing will ever be the same. God bless you my dear friend. I love you. Mark Anthony Adams. 1958 – 2023.”
On the other hand, drummer Henry Vasquez, in the band since 2009, shared some photos, wrote: “With an extremely heavy heart I was notified this evening of the passing of one of my best friends, Mark Adams.” He also notes that Adams was a “great friend, supportive and loyal friend to the end.” As well as saying how difficult it was to watch him suffer from Parkinson’s Disease.
Mark had been battling the disease for long years. In 2018 a GoFundMe campaign was launched to help him with treatment-related costs. His first stint in Saint Vitus – his name was inspired by the song “St. Vitus’ Dance” from Black Sabbath’s 1972 album ‘Vol. 4’ – , the group he helped form when it was still called Tyrant, lasted from 1981 to 1991, when he released essential doom metal albums such as Saint Vitus (1984), Hallow’s Victim (1985) and Born to Late (1986). Not to mention Mournful Cries (1988) and V (1990).
After a brief exit, he returns in 1992 and stays until 1996, and records with the band the albums C.O.D. (1992) and Die Healing (1995). The bassist leaves again in the sequence to return in 2003 and then only in 2008.
