Canadian band debuts with a vigorous, dynamic and catchy album

When I hear people who are not fond of this style saying that power metal ‘is all the same’ and lives in a box, I don’t even sketch an argument. After all, in general terms, the concept is usually locked in the epic universe. But, mainly, under a track shaped by the abusive use of double pedals, soaring vocals, stellar solos, and much, much melody.
On the contrary. Especially for those who love this sphere and come across honest and talented bands when recording their phonogram. Yes, this is the case with the Canadian brigade Walk With Titans. Born in Montreal in the class of 2019, the line-up consists of: Jonathan Vézina (vocals), Louis Jacques (lead guitar), Nick Maugy (base guitar), Lydz Grodin (bass) and Nikko Cyr (drums).
As we all know (and feel), the following years were the pandering but not the slacking off, not least because they signed with Rockshots Records for the release of their debut album. And it came. After sharing “Seven Against Thebes” and “Herakles”, two powerful singles by the way, the band released Olympian Dystopia on CD and digital format.
Already by the appetizers one can notice the references in the course of its 50 minutes. Names such as Angra, Rhapsody of Fire are very present here, but Stratovarius ends up being the most visible in function of the vocals and, sometimes, the progression of the compositions.
Unlike most epic-themed groups, Walk With Titans uses Greek mythology as a creative source. At the same time, this same theme serves as a parallel to the band’s views on life. More philosophical, impossible.
“Edge of Time” for example, talks about Kronos, god of time, devouring us all. Musically it is one of the most exciting moments of the album, as it brings power metal at its best: fast, virtuosic, and with catchy passages. “Final Dawn”, however, is reminiscent of Running Wild, but with the melodic tenor of Timo Kotipelto and co.
Another highlight on the album is the infectious “Gift of Fire”. And it’s not by chance; it features the special participation of guitarist Renato Osorio, known for his work with the fantastic Hibria. Needless to say, he shines on the solo.
Also worth mentioning is “Eurydice”, the track that closes the album. Courtesy of the various floating nuances in this little epic based on pure melody. I dare say this will be a must-have in future live performances. Highlight to the guitar solos, waving distantly to Kiko Loureiro.
The avalanche of power metal continues as intense as ever, and among the equals, some shine for their ability to provide strong songs that catch you right away, but also long after they are released. And Walk With Titans has a good chance with Olympian Dystopia. Great album.
